Backup on Remote Server

Overview

This feature lets you store backups of your Softaculous installations (like WordPress, Joomla, etc.) on a remote server instead of your local hosting space. Supported since Softaculous version 4.8.9.

Supported protocols: FTP (default), SFTP, FTPS.

Step 1: Add a Remote Backup Location

1. Log into your control panel and open Softaculous Enduser area.

2. Go to Edit Settings.

3. Click Add Backup Location.

4. Fill in these fields:

  • Location Name: A name for easy reference (e.g. "My Remote FTP")
  • Server Host: e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com or IP address
  • Protocol: FTP, SFTP, or FTPS
  • Port: Usually 21 for FTP, 22 for SFTP (default shown)
  • FTP Username: Your remote account username
  • FTP Password: The matching password
  • Backup Location: Relative path, e.g. /backups or backups/

5. Click Add Backup Location to save.

(Tip: After adding, you can test the connection if the interface allows — check for success message.)

Step 2: Set as Default (Optional but Recommended)

1. Still in Edit Settings.

2. Select your new location using the radio button.

3. Click Edit Settings to save.

This makes it the automatic choice if no specific location is set for an installation.

Option A: Use Remote Backup for a New Installation

1. In Softaculous, select your script and click the Install tab.

2. Fill in normal install details (domain, directory, admin info, etc.).

3. Scroll to Advanced Options.

4. Choose your remote Backup Location from the dropdown.

5. Click Install.

Future backups (manual or automated) will now go to the remote server.

Option B: Switch an Existing Installation to Remote Backup

1. In Softaculous, find your installation and click the Edit icon.

2. On the edit page, find the Backup Location dropdown.

3. Select your remote location.

4. Click Edit Installation to save.

All new backups for this site will now use the remote server.

Quick Notes & Tips

  • If you delete a remote location, affected installations fall back to the Default or local server backups.
  • Make sure the remote server has enough space and correct write permissions in the backup folder.
  • You can edit or delete locations later from the Edit Settings page.
  • Remote backups work with manual backups and automated backups (if enabled).
